ElitePlus™ Sod in California

A cool-season, drought-tolerant turfgrass

Our most popular cool-season turfgrass is a blend of improved fescue and bluegrass which has year-round dark green color. The “Plus” is that it will gradually repair minor damage over time without the need for reseeding. It has a medium leaf blade, disease resistance, partial shade tolerance and a deep root system for drought tolerance. This variety makes for easy lawn care and adapts well to the varied climates and soils of the West.

Maintenance Guide

For the first 20 days, water as needed to keep the topsoil moist to a 3-inch depth. After 20 days, water three or more times a week during warm weather. In cooler weather, water once or twice a week. Sandy soil requires more frequent watering than clay soil. Inland areas require more water than coastal areas. Special attention should be paid to slopes and mounds where runoff occurs. More frequent, shorter watering may be necessary.
Fertilize 7 days after installation and in six to eight week intervals, depending on your lawn’s color. Light green is an indication that your lawn needs fertilizer. Use an all-purpose fertilizer, and follow label directions. Applying a fertilizer with Nitrogen in the heat of summer will increase the potential for disease. Instead, apply a fertilizer consisting primarily of Iron at four to eight week intervals during the summer.
Mow seven days after installation. Mow to a height of 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches. Weekly mowing recommended except in cold weather, when mowing may be less frequent. Never mow more than one third of the blade at one time; it may injure the plant.
A-G Elite Plus is highly resistant to common disease problems. The appearance of brown spots may be a result of a watering problem. If brown spots remain after adjusting your watering routine, a disease may be present. Consult your local garden center as soon as possible.
After your new sod has been established at least four weeks, you may begin pesticide application for insect control, if necessary. Because pest and weed conditions vary from area to area, it is best to follow the recommendations of your local garden center or the extension specialist for your area.
